Arsaniq School - Secondary 2 & 3

A dedicated group of students at Arsaniq School in Kangiqsujuaq met with Naalak, an Inuit Elder. Together they explored Naalak’s early life, his birth in an Igloo, and their society’s transition to a permanent community. To mitigate the great contrasts of his experience with their own, they also interviewed Naalak’s son Lukasie and one of their own classmates, Attasi, who was Naalak’s great-grandson. Their interviews cover the difficult transition from their nomadic past on the Tundra, living with dogs in an ancient tradition, to their current culture that boasts most of the conveniences southerners take for granted.

Attasi Napaalluk was a key player in the creation of this podcast. He researched, conducted interviews and recorded sounds as well as being one those interviewed for our story.

At 15, Attasi was full of life and brought a smile to anyone lucky enough to have met him. He was an excellent student, a great athlete and a wonderful friend.

His young life was cut short on March 29, 2009 and he will be greatly missed by his teachers, family and friends. We dedicate this podcast to him. May he live on through his words.

Beurling Academy - Secondary 4

Beurling Academy is named for Verdun native George Frederick "Buzz" Beurling who distinguished himself as a fighter pilot during World War II. The students of Beurling Academy chose, appropriately, to interview Daniella, a Polish immigrant whose adolescent experiences included the terrors of the German invasion of Poland, work in a German factory and, finally, the Allied liberation.

Meeting her Lithuanian husband after the war, they began their married life in Belgium, but, unhappy with her husband's work options, she secretly signed them up to come to Canada.

Westwood Senior High School - Secondary 4

Do you really know your neighbours? The people of Hudson, a well-settled enclave and ferry point on the lower Ottawa River, thought they knew Charlie Wilson, the Englishman with the nice family who arrived in the mid-1960s. But the events of just one day changed all that. Two generations later, the students of Hudson's Westwood Senior High, the same school the Wilson children attended, talked to their neighbours to learn the true story of the man who came from away, and then was taken away, and what he left behind.

Mecatina School - Secondary 5

When we thought of our past, we thought of the seal fishery. Our town, our home was built upon this industry. The days have long gone for this type of fishery but the fisherman remain and with them their stories. The secondary five class interviewed 3 men involved with the fishery, Ivan Smith, Leonard Robertson and Russell Robertson. Ivy Robertson, the wife of a seal fisherman was also interviewed. The opportunity to sit and listen to stories of a different time was wonderful. Our podcast attempts to allow you a glimpse into that past.

La Tabatière is located on the Lower North Shore of Quebec. This small isolated town is home to approximately 600 people.

Laval Liberty High School - Secondary 5

Something magical happens when people are asked to revisit their school days: Images weave a surrounding, voices create a mood, and nostalgia paints an untouched haven in a graduate's mind. A collective consciousness binds graduates to their predecessors in solidarity. After all, each student goes through the drudging reality of classes seasoned by at least one remarkable teacher. Yet each decade provides its flavour and flare, and each gain in progress carries a loss, and each loss carries forth a new beginning. The woods surrounding the school give way to apartment buildings, and sounds of dead leaves under students' footsteps give way to the sounds of vibrating phones in their pockets. And Laval Liberty is reborn and revisited.

Baie Comeau High School - Secondary 3

The students at Baie Comeau High School chose the topic of our town origins and the role of the Ontario Paper Company.

It became evident as our research and interviews progressed, that an era had long gone - an era wherein a company influences every aspect of community life in ways that are unimaginable. We heard funny anecdotes, heard about the world of work and community life that people valued and looked back on with great fondness. We also realized that hundreds of unique stories will soon disappear if we, as youth and educators, do not engage our seniors in recording their oral history.

Howard S. Billings Regional High School - Secondary 1

Students answered the question: "What life experiences make you who you are?" The students chose a novel: Cut by Patricia McCormick, Perfect by Natasha Friend, A Child Called It by David Pelzer or Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen. In the novel they read, life experiences influenced the character about the choices and decisions they made. The subject they interviewed recounted stories about their experiences and was able to reflect on how those experiences made them the person they have become. Examples were war, divorce and sickness.

Laurentian Regional High School - Secondary 4

Today we are in the midst of the worst economic recession in many decades. Millions of people throughout the world have lost their jobs and their homes. Many are resorting to violence or mass protests. When hard times come, what skills, attitudes and values most enable a person to triumph over their difficulties? This was the question we posed to three seniors who had lived through the Depression and World War II. Their surprising and inspiring answers helped us understand how one can succeed regardless of the challenges one faces in life.

Westmount High School - Secondary 3

In the spring of 1963, terrorism hit the traditionally tranquil, largely affluent municipality of Westmount, Quebec. A group of French-speaking ultra-nationalists who called themselves the Front de Libération du Québec, or FLQ, planted time bombs in mailboxes in different parts of Westmount. Walter Leja, an explosives expert, was maimed for life while trying to dismantle one such bomb. Why did the terrorists choose Westmount? For them, it was a symbol of the wealthy English-speaking minority that they bitterly resented. In the ensuing years, the FLQ continued to make terrorist attacks, culminating in the October Crisis of 1970, when the federal government invoked the War Measures Act to restore order to the province. Students at Westmount High School went out to learn more about the FLQ and the impact that their violent actions had on Westmount and on Quebec anglophones overall.
